INGA SALVAIRE

The first time we met Inga was in front of Madison Square Garden.  As brand new New-Yorkers we wondered on which bench of the garden we were going to sit, before realizing it was no garden but a huge stadium. Inga was wearing a beautiful lace sweater that she had recently knit and we knew at first sight she was going to be one of our star knitters!

What is your knitting specialty?
I enjoy any kind of knitting, but lace in particular. As I make jewelry too, I love making beaded knit necklaces.

What neighborhood do you live in?
I live in Yonkers

What do you like doing when you are not knitting?
Reading, long walks in Van Cortland park, going to the Met Opera and having fun with my husband and dog Greta

Who taught you how to knit and how long ago?
I cannot remember myself not knitting. All women in my family knit and learning and teaching just happened as if by itself. My first large project was a poncho when I was about seven and it was a beautiful striped thing that I wore for years and which later turned into several pairs of socks (yarn should not be wasted!)

How long have you been living in New York?
For twelve years

Knitting has taught me how beauty can be created out of nothing and I would love my creations to bring a little warmth and joy to whoever wears them.
